Purpose
 

Federal transportation legislation requires that a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) be designated for each urban area with a population of more than 50,000 people in order to carry out the metropolitan transportation planning process. Each urban area with a population greater then 200,000 is designated as a Transportation Management Area (TMA.)

The Division of Planning coordinates transportation planning activities with the nine (9) MPOs across the state. There are now 4 TMAs in Kentucky: Louisville, Lexington, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, and Evansville/Henderson. The non-TMA MPOs are Ashland, Bowling Green, Clarksville, Owensboro, and Radcliff-Elizabethtown. The MPO planning boundaries are identified below:
